LONDON — A bomb disposal unit was dispatched to a major airport outside London on Monday after security officials reported a suspect package and evacuated all passengers from the terminal. All incoming flights into Luton Airport were canceled and the approach road to the terminal was closed, a statement from the airport said. Passengers were forced to wait outside the building, and the situation had not been resolved by 3:30 p.m. (10:30 a.m. ET). Sarah Wilkinson, a spokesperson for Bedfordshire Police, said the bomb squad had been called just "to have a look" and were not yet at the stage of considering detonating the package. She added that it had been "going through to departures and security were not happy with it," although she did not know the reason for their concern.

Luton Airport, some 30 miles outside London city center, is the U.K.’s sixth largest airport and serves mainly holiday destinations. Britain recently raised its international terrorism alert to its second-highest level, saying the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS) posed the country's greatest-ever security risk.
