MAINZ, Germany — Commuter block took on a whole new meaning in the Germany city of Hamburg, where vandals bricked over the door of a train car.

Police told NBC News that the train had been picking up passengers for more than an hour on Tuesday afternoon "before [the driver] realized that one of the doors was blocked with a brick wall."

"We assume that the unknown culprits prepared the aerated concrete blocks in advance,” Hamburg federal police spokesman Ruediger Carstens said Thursday.

He said surveillance video from the train showed "at least three masked suspects," with one man seen spraying paint on the surveillance cameras while two others bring in the stones.

Carstens said the vandalism could cost tens of thousands of dollars to repair and that the perpetrators could face up to five years in prison.
