Gardner Expected to Announce Colorado Senate Bid

Rep. Cory Garnder, R-Colo., is expected to announce his candidacy for the U.S. Senate on Saturday, a move that could allow the Republican Party to further expand the 2014 Senate playing field.

The second-term Congressman will be attempting to knock off Democratic Sen. Mark Udall in what will likely be a completive race that will give the GOP another strong candidate in a position to potentially steal a seat away from Senate Democrats.

A press release said Gardner’s “major announcement” about the Senate race will be held at Denver Lumber Company.

Ken Buck, Colorado’s 2010 Senate GOP candidate, and state Rep. Amy Stephens abandoned their bids for Udall’s seat once it was reported Gardner would be running. Tea Party backed state Sen. Owen Hill has remained in the race and will challenge Gardner in the Republican primary in June.
