Some Republicans had a not-so-cordial message for departing Attorney General Eric Holder on Thursday: Good riddance.

Holder was a lightning rod for Republican criticism during his tenure, including for the Fast and Furious gun scandal and the IRS targeting controversy. GOP lawmakers frequently called for his ouster, and he was the first sitting cabinet official in history to be held in contempt of Congress.

Many did not hold back after the news broke of Holder's resignation.

House Oversight and Government Affairs head Rep. Darrell Issa, perhaps Holder's most bitter foe on the Hill, had this to say:

In a statement, Judiciary Committee member Sen. John Cornyn of Texas said: "Unfortunately the American people, myself included, lost confidence in the Attorney General's ability to lead a long time ago because of his continued willingness to put politics before the law."

Wrote Florida Rep. Ron DeSantis: "Eric Holder's tenure has been marked by the politicization of justice, disrespect for the rule of law and Constitution, and suppression of the truth .. President Obama could hardly do worse when naming Holder's successor."
