Clinton On Biggest Surprise as Sec. of State

What surprised Hillary Clinton most during her time as Secretary of State was not any world leader or foreign culture, but the level of interest those around the globe had in how well she got along with President Barack Obama.

"The personal thing that surprised me was how curious people were with my relationship with President Obama very far from the United States," she during a discussion with University of Miami President Donna Shalala.

Clinton said that in her first trip as America's top diplomat in 2009, a TV journalist in Indonesia asked her how she could work for Obama following the contentious Democratic presidential primary one year earlier.

"I thought, you know, this is not to be accepted by everybody everywhere," she said. "If you run against somebody and you lose, you could get exiled or imprisoned, not offered the secretary of state position."

"When he asked me to serve I said yes because we both love our country," she added. "I probably was asked that question more than any other question."
