Sombr’s NSFW Belt at the VMAs Is Dividing the Internet

The MTV VMAs have always been known for some outrageous looks. And this year, one particular artist’s outfit is definitely creating some conversation.

Sombr arrived at the ceremony Sept. 27, wearing a long, striped furry jacket from ERL, no shirt and pair of black leather pants that were held together by a belt with the word “SEX” across it. And people aren’t quite sure what to think.

“this is not the serve he thought this was,” one person wrote on social media platform X.

Sombr is slated to perform during the tribute to late pop icon George Michael. He was announced as one of several other acts, including Raye and Teddy Swims who will be paying homage to the “Freedom! ‘90” singer, who died a decade ago on Christmas day.

Sombr joins a long list of artists who have shocked the world with their VMAs outfits. Lady Gaga, for example, turned heads at the 2010 ceremony with her famous dress made completely out of meat. And Miley Cyrus made headlines with her quite revealing Versace suspenders look when she hosted the awards in 2015.

The 2026 MTV Video Music Awards are being hosted by Snoop Dogg at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. Madonna leads with 11 nominations. The show will feature special presentations, like the MTV VMA Artist Director Honors and Video Vanguard Award. Taylor Swift, who received nine nominations, will receive the Artist Director Honors award and debut the music video for her new single “Patient Zero.” The ceremony will include tributes to Dolly Parton and George Michael, as well.
