PRETORIA, South Africa -- Investigators in the murder trial of Olympic sprinter Oscar Pistorius met with Apple officials in California in a bid to unlock the iPhone police found after his girlfriend's shooting, South African authorities said.

Nathi Mncube, spokesperson for South Africa's National Prosecuting Authority, told NBC News that the meeting occurred Thursday, just days before Pistorius' trial is due to begin. Investigators seeking evidence have been trying to access the "blade runner's" phone to read text and Whatsapp messages but the athlete claims he has forgotten the password.

Pistorius says he shot his model girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp through his closed bathroom door on February 14, 2013, mistaking her for an intruder.

Prosecutors believe the couple had a heated argument and Steenkamp locked herself in the bathroom before he opened fire.
