Home Depot said Wednesday it is “working around the clock” to verify reports that it was the victim of a massive data breach. The security news website Krebs on Security reported that the apparent breach could have exposed credit and debit card information from customers at nearly all Home Depot stores in the U.S. “Our forensics and security teams have been working around the clock since we first became aware of a potential breach Tuesday morning, working with leading IT security firms, including Symantec and FishNet Security, in that regard,” Home Depot spokesperson Paula Drake said in a statement. “There is no higher priority for us at this time than to rapidly gather the facts so that we can provide answers to our customers."

That was a stronger statement than one the company issued Tuesday, when it said that it was looking into "unusual activity" related to customer data. Krebs has reported that the same group of Russian and Ukrainian hackers believed to be responsible for hacking attacks at Target, P.F. Chang’s and other businesses may be behind the apparent Home Depot breach.
