Violence, '90s-Style: New Doom and Wolfenstein Games on Horizon

Get ready to blow up Nazis and space demons. Bethesda releases new details about "Wolfenstein: The New Order" and the next Doom game.

Before there was "Halo" or "Call of Duty," there was "Wolfenstein 3D," the first-person shooter that introduced a generation of gamers to gratuitous violence in 1992. Now Bethesda has announced the release date for "Wolfenstein: The New Order," along with some exciting news for fans of another classic game, "Doom."

Wolfenstein will feature plenty of the franchise’s beloved Nazi-blasting action, this time in an alternate version of the 1960s. It comes out for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on May 20, 2014, Bethesda announced on Wednesday. (A version will also be available for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3).

Those who pre-order will get a bonus: Access to beta “for the next DOOM game.” That is pretty much all of the information that Bethesda — which bought the game’s original creator, id Software, in 2009 — has divulged about the new title so far. It's not clear when it will be released, what it will be called, or whether or not it's a version of the long-delayed, possibly scrapped "Doom 4," originally announced in 2008.

The last installment in the series, "Doom 3," was released in 2004.
